National youth survey -2009/10
LYON Contribution made towards the national youth research/analysis -2009/10 with SPARC and thereby disseminated its key findings among the youth. Some key findings have mentioned below.
Most of selected youth were staying with their parents and 73% being never married. Only 26% was married.
The ethnic and religious composition of these youths were very much similar to that of the census of population.
With regard to ethnic harmony, language proficiency seemed to be very important as it facilitate communication between youth in other ethnic groups and release tension and misunderstanding. A very large proportion of Sinhalese youth (69%) were unable to speak Tamil, the language of the minority at all. Nearly 40% of the youth could communicate in English ,the link language.
